MYTHS

Myth I

The beginning of every sound lies in the human heart,
things outside move the human heart,
feelings arise, feelings formed of sounds
that vary as these.
Notes are the order of sounds.
If played, in arrangement,
accompanied by the movement of dance
with spear and shield, with flute and feathers,
it is then called music.

From the beginning of human history, ritual acts have been expressed in and with sounds. From the first human tonal expressions, whispering, murmuring, humming and shouting the first word evolved.

In mythology sound is the bridge between the living and the dead, between the living and the gods. Creation myths of primitive people recount a dark tone as the mother of the Creator. Similar reports are found in Afro-Asian advanced civilizations and the American Indian cultures.

The second stage of development is also pure sound. It depicts the connection between sound and phenomena. Flashing thunder or singing stars, ringing dawn and glowing song all belong to the category of light sound.

Light sound is the basic primordial matter. It is still invisible, but pictures and sounds can be derived from it, allowing us to approach a visible and audible understanding of its form qualities.

Light sound, the significant primordial matter, granted infinite power to its owner. In the ensuing power struggle to possess it, light sound escaped from the gods and settled in the seas, in trees and stone, in drums and zithers, in bows and axles.

The world materialized in this process. Sound pictures transformed themselves into images which became more concretely visible and tangible. Sound sank into the material and became one with it.

Myth II

God sleeps in stone, breathes in plants, dreams in animals and awakens in humans. (from the Indian Vedas)

Brahman Indian creation mythology reports that the first humans were transparent, glowing, musical beings who flew over the earth. When they settled on earth and began to eat plants, they lost their lightness and brightness. Their body became opaque and the single reminder of their original sound substance was their voice.

In Indian mythology, sound is also the common primordial matter of all cosmic appearances.
Gods are the purest tones. From all living beings down to objects, the purity and portion of voice sinks gradually. However there is nothing that does not have a hidden voice of some kind.

A SoundStone has a very high percentage of primordial matter, especially the volcanic phonolite, which is considered the most ancient material. Rocks which are shaped like humans or animals are regarded as gods or hymns. The same concept of the nature of matter gives rise to the idea that heavenly bodies, humans and animals could also originate from stone.

Myth III

The gods fastened a banana to the end of one string and a stone to the end of another, then let them fall to earth to test the humans. Which gift from the gods would they prefer? As could be expected, the New Guineans chose the banana.

From the perspective of the myth, this moment sealed the mortality of mankind. As man greedily grasped the ripeliving  fruit, he lost life. Had he, however, chosen the less attractive, but more important stone, mankind would have been rewarded with the godsī gift of immortality.
